Here is my standing on most of the issues:
Taxes
My tax philosophy is that we make the Bush tax cuts permanent, abolish the death tax, and lower marginal tax rates. I believe that we should make the Bush tax cuts permanent because if they are not, and allowed to expire, the financial and economic futures of millions of hard working families will become bleaker and dimmer. Employment opportunities will become harder to find as well. The economic future of our country may become shrouded with uncertainty and insecurity. The death tax is an act saying that when a family member inherits a family business after the previous owner dies; the new owner must pay 47% in taxes on all the land, buildings, equipment, and anything else they inherit. This means a business may lose half of all its resources when it passes down a generation. I believe we should lower the tax rates for all Americans.
Defense
I would like to get our troops out of Iraq as much as anyone, but we must finish what we started there. We must end the War on Terror before pulling out our troops. Leaving now would just incite more war in the South East and it creates a high possibility of more fighting here in America. After all, the army’s main objective is to protect America. The foreign oil problem ties into this too. When we buy foreign oil, we are paying our enemies. This just increases the amount of resources and power they have. It will also keep our troops their longer.
Energy
The energy crisis is an important part of our daily lives and environment. I think that we need to stop relying so much on foreign oil. Not only does it make our country much more vulnerable to the countries we buy it from, it makes buying the oil and gasoline much more expensive for the government and us, the citizens. I think we should fund research to find new, affordable ways to generate electricity. Until we can find new sources of energy, we must focus on making our homes and cars more energy efficient. That way there will be less need to purchase and consume so much oil.
Death Penalty
I believe the death penalty is an extremely effective deterrent against heinous crimes such as acts of terrorism, killing sprees, murders involving torture, and the killing of law enforcement authorities. The death penalty should only be used when there is definite evidence, like DNA, and when the jury has no doubt of a defendant’s guilt. The more we enforce the penalty, the less people will chance getting it. For example, if Mr. Maze started giving worse punishments more often at school, would you try to behave more or less? Is it really fair for a mass murderer to kill an innocent family and only be kept in prison? What if that murderer escaped? Wouldn’t you expect him to try to kill again? I am not willing to take this chance.
Immigration
Today, I am going to talk about immigration. First of all, we need to increase our border's security. Second, we should begin some sort of system that keeps record of whether a person can work in America or not. If an employer knowingly hires an illegal immigrant they should be fined. Legal immigrants have been a great benefit to our country. The United States of America was built on legal immigration. Many of us, myself included, are descendents of legal immigrants. We need to increase the benefits of legal immigration so that more bright minds and great people can come here to benefit from and keep our country great.
